FHEPS, formerly known as Family Eviction Prevention FEPSis a City and State-funded housing supplement to help families that are moving from homeless shelters to permanent housing or are in danger of losing their current housing by providing rental support for up to five years. FHEPS applications can be filed through shelter staff or designated legal providers and community-based organizations CBOs in each borough. To get a referral, tenants can visit their public assistance center or Housing Court Liaison.

This will happen if: A person in the household receives CA and has income, such as from a job. If there is someone in the household who is not required to be on the CA case, such as someone who receives income from SSI.

One state welfare program provides approved cash assistance within 45 days from the date an application is received.
Contact program staff for more information about local processing times. Cash assistance offers temporary relief from financial hardship. Depending on the program, cash assistance may cover basic needs, such as food, shelter and housing, as well as emergency medical treatment for those who qualify. Most programs are set up to provide immediate help if an individual or family has little or no cash and needs emergency housing, food, utilities, clothing or medical care.
The system allows state governments to release cash assistance via a plastic debit card. To apply for cash assistance through a welfare program, you must meet minimum eligibility requirements, which vary widely from program to program. On average, you must have low or very low income, be underemployed or unemployed, and be pregnant or responsible for a child below 19 years of age, according the Family Financial Help website.
To receive cash assistance, you must establish proof of eligibility, prepare an application and complete a phone, in-person or in-home interview. Not all interviews are subject to advance notice. There are nearly 3, families with children currently in DHS shelter as a result of eviction. The increase in the shelter census is primarily because the length of stay of families in shelter has increased while the number of exits has declined. As shelter census and length-of-stay rates have increased, the DHS shelter system for families with children continues to experience extremely low vacancy rates. Indeed, on April 8,the vacancy rate for families with children in the shelter system was.
Although 1, units have been added to the shelter system for families with children between April 8, and April 8,the system continues to experience high capacity levels due to the decline in vacancy rates. Census data also demonstrates the urgent need for an additional program available to families whose lives have recently been affected by domestic violence.
As of April 3,there were 1, households, including 1, children, in HRA domestic violence shelters, and more than families in the DHS shelter system were survivors of domestic violence certified by HRA. Finally, there are a number of shelters for families with children that have been identified for imminent closure. Providing a rent supplement is the best way to enable families in these shelters to be rapidly re-housed with as little disruption as possible.
Providing a rent supplement to families in a closing shelter, rather than relocating such families to another shelter, will allow them to exit the shelter system and remain in the community where the shelter is located.
This will permit stability and continuity in connection with schools, jobs, and community resources and services. Over a twelve-month period, the CITYFEPS Programs will assist approximately 1, families with children and pregnant women to secure permanent housing in the community.
